Introduction to Our Blog

Eskew Law LLC is a small general practice law firm located in downtown Indianapolis.  We focus primarily on criminal defense but handle family law and personal injury cases as well.  We will be blogging about the different areas of law in which we practice, current events, new cases and how they affect you.  Hopefully we will also secure some guest blogs from prosecutors, police officers, and judges to gain some insight into their points of view on the same subjects.  The topic of our first blog comes from a question asked by one of my clients last week as we were reviewing a plea that released him from jail and dropped his maximum executed sentence from 50 years to 6 to18 months. In the midst of our discussion, the client stopped me and asked how I decided to become a criminal defense lawyer.  The question caught me off-guard because of the timing, but it is a question I have been asked many times.

I graduated from DePauw Universtiy with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science.  After college I worked in database development and maintenance for two years.  I was discouraged and bored with my work, and I knew I needed to do something else professionally.  I decided to attend law school with the thought that I would focus on Intellectual Property Law.  However, I was convinced to sign up for a trial advocacy class, and subsequently got hooked on criminal law.  I found that I loved the competition that had been missing since I played football at DePauw, and realized I would have been just as bored as a patent and trademark attorney as I had been as a database developer.

During my last year of law school I received an internship at a local prosecutor's office, and it was a very eye-opening experience.  I quickly learned that I was meant to be a criminal defense lawyer. Every day I am exhilarated by the opportunities I have to help people during extraordinarily important and difficult points in their lives.  Whether they are wrongfully accused or have just made a poor decision, I appreciate every client who allows me to help them.
